Wizardry in Applesoft BASIC

Long, long ago, probably 1982, a friend gave me a copy of a program that was supposedly a prototype of a role-playing game called Wizardry. I had just finished the real version of the game (which was written in Apple Pascal) and was astonished to see this crude, low-res graphics version written in Applesoft BASIC. It was done in way too much detail to be a forgery, and there were enough differences in the storyline that it really did seem to be something that could have involved into the final product.

Not recognizing the possibly long-term geek appeal of the program, I deleted it a few weeks later.

It's possible it was not what it appeared to be; maybe it wasn't a prototype but rather a knockoff programmed by an idle Wizardry fanboy who had neither the money to buy a real copy nor the moral makeup to pirate it. But either way, it would be cool to see it today. I wonder whether a copy of this BASIC program still exists on a dusty 5.25" floppy somewhere in the world.

I realise this is way out of context, but I'm at a bit of a loose end and you seem like such a helpful guy. On May 28, 2005 you wrote a blog about changing the firmware version of a Linkstation. I'm trying to do that, but can't track down v1.45. Any ideas where I could locate it?

Alastair, I'm not sure where to download it, either, but today there's no longer any reason to do so. There are two reasons why this is true. (1) As long as the password I found works with whatever the latest version of the firmware is (e.g., 1.47), just go ahead and use that one, because it's newer and better than the version I happened to use to extract the password. (2) Others have taken the password and produced excellent open firmware images that are better than anything from Buffalo -- see OpenLink and FreeLink for example.

There is a copy of the program Wizardry at the following site.

ftp://ftp.apple.asimov.net

Once there go to pub/appleII/images/games/rpg

You will also need Gzip to open it, for it is a .gz file.

You can get that at the following site

http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/gzip/

As far as getting that on to a 5.5 disk, there are ways. But it would just be easier to download an emulator for whatever type of computer you have.

Applewin is an excellent one for the PC

As for the Mac, google "apple II emulator for macs"

What you might have had was anearly copy of a program called Silvern Castle that was written in BASIC in answer to the comment in the Wizardry docs that a game like Wizardry couldn't be done in BASIC. Silvern Castle still exists and is now at version 9.2 and available from the authors website located here:

http://webpages.milwpc.com/finkjc/silverncastle/

Check it out. Of course it requires an Apple IIe, IIc or IIGS with a 3.5 drive at a minimum and preferably hard drive.
