Playlists on the Sansa e260

This is how to put playlists on the Sansa e260 MP3 player (part of the e200 series) using an application other than Windows Media Player, such as Winamp, without having to switch from MTP to the less convenient MSC mode. I won't go into the reasons why you'd want to do this; if you've ever used WMP, the reasons are plain as day.

Some background why these instructions are even necessary: the e260 seems to have a bug with playlists. You can add .pla files to \PLAYLISTS, but no matter how correctly you've formatted them, they won't show up in the Sansa UI. The device seems to need a kick in the head to tell it to re-read the files in \PLAYLISTS. These instructions tell you how to conveniently deliver that kick.

Note that my e260 has firmware 01.01.11A, and these instructions work with Winamp 5.24 full version (full is the free version that supports WMA).

First, start up Winamp and add your songs to its library. You've probably already done this.

Next, create a playlist. Call it "Exercise" for this example. Drag a few songs from your library to it.

Next, connect your e260 in MTP mode. It should show up after a few seconds under the "Portables" item in the Winamp hierarchy. Right-click the Exercise playlist and send to your e260. Wait for the playlist and songs to sync, then disconnect your device.

(Optional) go to your e260's playlists and confirm that Exercise didn't show up. If you do see it, then you probably have a future version of the firmware that doesn't have this problem.

Here's the kick. Turn the e260 off by holding down the power button for a couple seconds until you see "GOODBYE." Release the power button. Switch the lock slider to the locked position. Press the power button and keep holding it down. The blue wheel light will come on, and then you'll see the SanDisk logo. Then the screen will go black and you'll see

Key LOCKED
System shutdown

Once you see that message, you can let go of the power button. Flip the lock slider to the unlocked position and press the power button again. Now navigate back to your playlists and you should see Exercise!

Fortunately you don't have to go through these hoops with every sync. You can freely edit existing playlists and add/remove music; these actions appear to work fine. This hack is necessary only to get new playlists to show up.

SanDisk, please fix this bug!

Thank you very much for the information. This bug was driving me nuts - but your recommendation worked to perfection.

Update your Firmware to 1.01.12A. Then your playlists should be OK. After I did this update, I can play with playlists just like Payton Manning do with the DBs.

Did anyone face problems with the power up. Sometimes mine does not work and I have to let it rest for few hours. Then it will be fine.

I have got firmware 1.00.12A.
I did exactly as you said and it worked!
Did not see the playlists until that little kick.

Thank You

Thanks for this info! I was going crazy trying to find out how to add another playlist besides the "Go List." Before I added the new playlist using Winamp I updated the firmware to the latest available which made meant there was one less step on myplayer (ie. I don't have to do that special reset). The only problem I still see is that I can't add music that is already on my player to my newly created playlists. Is there a way around this or do you have to do that through Winamp each time? Also, does anyone know how to create separate folders (Albums) for the videos? When I use the Sansa Media Converter it has a field for the Album name to send the video I'm converting but each time I enter a new name I don't see it appear on they player. THanks.

I almost gave up on this player until I spoke with Sandisk tech support who gave me a link to access how to video tutorials from the Sandisk website.
Check it out.

Thanks for sharing! There isnt too much information on how to use the Sansa, and the little problems one might encounter when manuevering the device. However, does anyone know how to remove songs from the Sansa? I know you can buy cards to input more information, but what if you dont want a song to be there anymore?

I wrote a program that will help you with your Playlists, you will love it, it creates Playlists for the directory structure of your e200 series palyer. Download it at:

http://www.infosys.tuwien.ac.at/Staff/cp/playlist_creator.zip

And can you tell me a contact adress for sansa tech support? I'm gonna ask them if they buy my software :)

Remeber, you need to install the .NET runtime either by Windows update or from microsoft.

cheers, Christian

All I had to do was (in MSC mode) copy the playlist.pla that Windows Media Player 10 creates and sends to the Sansa and paste it on my desktop. I then renamed it to the Sansa playlist extension .plp and uncheck hidden file in properties. Restarted it and it shows up fine.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I tried many different ways , and none of them work.

I tried the little Prog of Christian, it just create .pla of all the artist. Not what i want at all.
I tried with WMP, step by step as mention, the songs sync, but the playlist is still not there. Not showing, even after restart.

What you suggest next?

i hade a corrupt mp3 that would not delete of the e260. in windows explorer i right clicked on the k:\SANSA E260 and clicked FORMAT, this erased all files i had put on the mp3 palyer including any pictures music and videos. it was the only way i could get a stuborn file that was curropted off the mp3 player. it only deleted files i had put on so dont worry about it deleting everything (firmware) maybee this will help someone else having problems deleting a curropted file.

after trying to use the playlist_creator.zip from (http://www.infosys.tuwien.ac.at/Staff/cp/playlist_creator.zip) it makes the playlist and it shows up in the playlist menu
BUT when i play a song from that playlist it says BAD TRACK. any suggestions. my firmware is 01.02.18a, on a E260 4 gig
this mp3 player is kinda a waste of money if you cant even make playlists. sandisk needs to fix this ..who only wants 1 playlist (go list) without going through all this trouble.
which music program works he best for transferring songs and playlists. i have tried media player 11, winamp, and rhapsody with no luck with playlists, obviously I can just put a crapload of songs by just using windows explorer but that doesn’t help much.

after messing with my new mp3 player for 2 days now i have finally got playlists to work with my e260. the only method i have gotten to work is a script that someone made to use your itunes playlists. It works great and was the ONLY way i could get playlists to work.

Christian, you're a f**king legend!!!

Works like a dream!!

I HATE using my sansa in MTP mode. I want to see exactly what's on there, where it is, etc.

I use Winamp, with the Media Library. I created playlists in winamp, and just dragged them onto my sansa, which had poppoed up in the portables just as a USB device (I had to say yes to the Winamp prompt "Do you want Winamp to manage this device").

After I'd dragged the music on, I noticed that it was in the root, rather than the music folder, but once I'd moved it to the Music folder everything fell into place.

Thank you very much - at last I can start enjoying my sansa!!

Daniel

Christian,

Thanks for making the Sansa playlist creator. Looks like a winner.

Thanks,
David

How can you delete songs on player without doing one at a time. I want to delete 200

Dave said:

A few things I've learned since getting my e270 a few days ago:

1) Screw Rhapsody. Best Buy only sells the player customized for them with Rhapsody. The dweeb told me I could delete it, but I can't, unless I find a way to wipe the firmware and force it to reload the non-Rhapsody firmware. Haven't gotten frustrated enough to undertake that yet.

2) Playlists - still buggy even with firmware 1.0.2.165. Found helpful info in this thread, but didn't need to go all the way through with the reset feature. First, be sure your player is in MTP or Playsforsure mode when you connect. Using WINMP11, I tried dragging my playlists over to the synch window, but they wouldn't show in the player. Then tried to adjust the sync settings in WinMP to sync automatically and selected just the playlists I wanted to synch. Still nothing showing. I opened the player under My Computer, and did see my playlists under the Playlists folder there. After disconnecting the unit and looking for my playlists one more time, they were there. It seems like maybe it was necessary to just view the playlists in the folder in Windows in order to complete the data write to the player. FYI, you may need to turn on the ability to view hidden files and folders in Windows to see this.

3) TO delete the excess crap that comes on your player, connect with the cable, look for the player under My Computer, be sure you tell windows to show hidden files and you will see all the folders within. You can find the sample songs and pix and stuff and delete them from there. I wasn't able to fully hose the junk until I first connected the player in Rhapsody (or MSC) mode. I recovered 2 GB of space on my 6 GB player!

All in all, it's a nice unit, but not perfect. Too bad you can't get a fully protective case since the wheel needs to remain accessible. I'm sure I'll wreck it before long.

John Holliday said:

For Judy - I'm guessing you meant 1000 songs. In any case, "songs" is a relative term. If the files are large the player will hold less of them. Just like any hard drive there is only so much space and larger files take up more of it.

For Mike - the preloaded songs on the Sansa are hidden. You'll have to go into MSC mode to find them. I recommend a DOS prompt because the DIR /A command will show all files regardless of their attributes. You can then use the ATTRIB -R -S -H *.* command in the specific folder on the Sansa to see them with just the DIR command. Then delete what you don't want.

Also, according to SanDisk support, you should format the device occasionally. I'm guessing maybe twice a year, though they didn't say that specifically. They did say it's to keep the file system clean. It's not a bad idea. When you format, do NOT right click the device in My Computer and choose format. Make sure the device is in MSC mode, right click My Computer and choose Manage from the menu. Then click on Disk Management in the left pane. In the right pane, find the Sansa device. There should be TWO partitions on the drive. One is smaller because it holds system files, etc. Right click the LARGER partition (which should be to the left of the smaller one) and choose Format. Make sure you set the file system to FAT32 and go ahead with the format. That will wipe out your songs without wiping out the system. When the format is done (and it may take a while) reset the device to MTP mode and sync it.

Mike,

I am so grateful for the info about getting the playlists to the sansa e260!! We have one we purchased quite a while back and never gotten around to doing the playlists. It was after I spent quite a while that I did a search and found your wonderful instructions! Thanks so very, very much! I'm so grateful for folks who take the time to share such info.

First I want to say that changing to Winamp from Windows media player was the BEST thing I could have done. who would have thought that Windows Media Player was so difficult to use and set up for use with my Sansa E260? Yeah, Right. Just take a look at Vista if you don't believe me.

The instructions you provided to create play lists was right on. It worked the first time. And Winamp responded effortlessly. I'm hooked!

Does anyone know where to get the preloaded songs? I know, I know, they are not the greatest, but I only liked one of them and I can't remember what the song name was - only that it was sort of sounded Asian.

I lost them trying to set up windows media player 11. UGGHH!

I've asked Sandisk folks - that was worthless.

ok
if youre player quit responding to windows or has formatting problems, follow these instructions-- i called sansa until they told me how to fix it and sent me their software.. now i uploaded it to filefront for others..
download Sandisk's own sansa frimware boot intlaller from this link-
http://files.filefront.com/Firmware+Bootexe/;9292890;/fileinfo.html

if player wont turn off, hold power button in for 15- 30 secs, and should turn off...
1--move switch to hold
2--hold the REC button on the side, and while holding, press power button
3-- this should make your player say "welcome to recovery mode"
4-- before connecting to computer, start the sansa software
5--when it says to connect it, do so (while still in recovery mode)
6-- say yes you want to format it and do everything it prompts.

disconnect and let the player fix itself, and it will be just like new again
